Around
the year 1930, a group of young men gathered together to form one of
the most original "soul stirring" institutions of our
time. From a small town in Texas, they went on to make music
history.
The
legendary Soul Stirrers have been true pioneers in the music
industry for seven decades. Their singing style has always been
innovative, which lends to the that they have influenced countless
artists over the years. Even today's top acts such as "Boys to
Men", "The Temptations", "Rod Stewart",
"The Isley Brothers", The Rolling Stones", and others
would testify to the effect the Soul Stirrers music had on their
lives and careers.
The
Soul Stirrers were the first gospel quartet group to feature a lead
singer with a background, as opposed to the jubilee style singing
that was prevalent in those days. They were also the first to
introduce a guitar accompaniment to their program; Pioneers In The
Truest Sense Of The Word.
In
1983, they joined together with "Morgan Freeman",
"The Five Blind Boys of Alabama", and other great artists
to perform in "The Gospel At Colonus", A Lee Breuer / Bob
Telson Adaptation of Sophacles' Greek Tragedy "Oedipus At
Colonus". For the past 17 years this play has been captivating
audiences all over the world, including spectacular runs on Broadway
and most recently, Moscow, Russia.
Being
the only gospel quartet to be inducted into the America's Music and
Entertainment Hall of Fame in 1988 and The Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in 1989, and the only one that will ever be, would also attest
to not only the lasting effect, but the historical influence the
group has had and continues to have on the musical and entertainment
culture worldwide.
From Carnegie Hall to Broadway, from small churches enormous cathedrals, from Paris to Russia to Manhatten, the Soul Stirrers
have performed for many, including presidents and royalty. For the
past several years they have even accompanied Rev. Jesse Jackson on
several of his trips. It was the reverend, in fact, who
conceptualized their latest recording, "Revisited".
Throughout
the years, the group has featured some very outstanding lead
singers; most notably "Sam Cooke", "Paul
Foster", "Johnny Taylor", "Jimmy Outler",
"Lou Rawls", and most recently the late "Martin
Jacox", and the story continues with Willie Rogers the last of these
legendary singers, who from the sixties to this day still weaves his
silky vocal threads thru many of The Legendary Soul Stirrers hits.
The
current group consist of:
"Willie Rogers - Lead Singer"
"Ben Odom - Manager, Music Director, Baritone, Bass
Guitarist"
"Gene Stewart"
"Michael Grady Jr. - Drummer"
